What Impacts Indoor Air Quality?

Damaged and dirty wall paintThe air quality inside your home is also known as Indoor Environmental Quality (IAQ). Clean, fresh air inside your home is critical for your health, comfort and work ability. Some air contaminants can produce an immediate effect on your health and others may not be noticed for years.

Some of the elements that can impact your indoor air quality are:

Ventilation. Poor ventilation inside your home prevents pollutants from escaping to the outside. It is important to allow fresh outside air into your home. Installing a mechanical ventilation system can facilitate air exchange and improve indoor air quality.

HVAC Contaminants. Dirt and dust particles can accumulate in the ductwork of your heating and cooling system. When your HVAC system runs these particles can circulate throughout your home. Be sure to conduct routine maintenance on your HVAC system and have your ducts cleaned.

Water and Humidity. Water from roof leaks, flooding or extreme humidity can propagate the growth of mold. Mold should be assessed by a professional and remediated if necessary. Mold can exist in a home even if it is not easily visible. Contact us to have your home checked for mold.

Chemicals. Some cleaning products contain toxic chemicals. These chemicals can remain in the air long after they are used. For your safety and to help improve your home’s indoor air quality, select non-toxic products whenever possible.
